True Choice Pathways helps adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities explore self-employment, develop practical business skills, and participate meaningfully in running their own small business. Participants do not need to have a business idea or know where to begin. Coaching is individualized, practical, and centered on each person’s interests, abilities, goals, and support needs.
IMPORTANT SERVICE BOUNDARY Independent Facilitation and Supported Self-Employment & Microbusiness Coaching are separate services and separate roles. To maintain clear professional boundaries, True Choice Pathways does not provide ongoing paid Independent Facilitation and Supported Self-Employment Microbusiness Coaching to the same participant at the same time. If a participant is interested in both services, we can explain the difference, help the participant and family understand their options, and provide resources for locating an independent facilitator. DISCOVER Identify the participant’s strengths, interests, abilities, support needs, and realistic business possibilities.
DESIGN Turn an idea into a practical plan by exploring customers, products or services, pricing, startup needs, and business responsibilities.
DEVELOP Build practical skills in areas such as customer communication, scheduling, money concepts, supplies, orders, record keeping, and business routines.
DIRECT Support the participant in operating the business, making meaningful decisions, solving problems, staying organized, and increasing independence over time.
MORE THAN STARTING A BUSINESS We do not simply help build a business around the participant. We help the participant understand the business, develop the skills to participate in it, and become increasingly involved in the decisions and activities that make the business work. When specialized expertise is needed, we can help participants prepare for meetings and connect with appropriate business professionals, advisors, and community resources.
A PERSON-CENTERED, NO-PRESSURE APPROACH Self-employment may be a good fit for some people and not for others. Participants are not pressured to start a business. An idea may be tested, changed, simplified, or lead to another employment direction. Discovery is a meaningful part of the process.
